The End is Nigh: September 18th
By Brian Knapp

There are 12 days left…

Cris is still dressed from the day.  She sits in a reclining chair at home, reading.  Candles burn and add to the light from the standing lamp in the corner.

The doorbell rings.  Cris looks at the wall clock.  9:18.  She places her book face down on the table beside her.  She returns the chair in order to stand.  She walks casually towards the door.

She looks through the peephole in the door.  Slowly, she unlocks the door and opens it.

CRIS: Hi.

Jaime takes one step, grabs her face, and kisses her intensely.  He kicks the door closed.

Cris recovers from the initial action and returns his embrace.

They separate briefly and look into each other’s eyes.

JAIME: Sorry I haven’t called today.  I should have called before I came…

Cris grabs his hand, and they slowly make their way into the living room.  Cris lifts Jaime’s shirt over his head.

Jaime unbuttons hers and peels it off.  He kicks off his shoes.

They continue to move across the living room, exchanging kisses and taking off clothes.

They make their way into an open doorway.  Cris is unbuckling Jaime’s belt.  They move into the room.

The door slams shut.

In the bedroom, a trail of pants and undergarments and socks leads across the room to the bed.

Jaime and Cris lie naked, partially covered by a comforter.  A few pillows made it to the floor.  Candles flicker throughout the room.

JAIME: Happy Rash Hashana.

CRIS: So THAT’S the occasion.

JAIME: No, the occasion is I’m horny as hell.

Cris laughs and smacks him with a pillow.

CRIS: What was all that “strong intimate connection” crap?

JAIME: Pillow talk, baby.

CRIS: You’re terrible.

JAIME: I did mean it, you know.

CRIS: The horny part?  Yeah I figured that out.

JAIME: No.  That you’re amazing.

Cris turns her head and reaches for a tissue.

JAIME: Did that disgust you just now or are you tearing up?

Cris grabs the tissue and takes it under the blanket.

CRIS: No, I’m cleaning up.

JAIME: Oh.  OHHHHHH.  They usually skip that part in the movies.

She tosses the tissue away in a receptacle next to the nightstand.  She turns and kisses him on the nose.

CRIS: I love you too.

Jaime smiles widely.  He reaches over her and takes a tissue as well.  He returns to his previous position and turns away to blow his nose.  He surreptitiously wipes a lone tear from his cheek.

CRIS: Can you believe that it’s been a week already?

JAIME: I researched the significance of that date in history in anticipation of what possible previous importance it held.

CRIS: What the hell?

JAIME: Crazy people often do things on particular days because it’s an anniversary of something they wished to grieve or celebrate.  They’re already saying that is was the anniversary of the Camp David Accords or something.  But I looked deeper to come up with less practical and more outlandish reasons.

Cris sits up a bit.

CRIS: When did you do all of this?

JAIME: Late last night.  Engaging in utterly useless pursuits is a coping mechanism for me, a stress reliever.  It helps me think.

CRIS: Why can’t you just drink like normal people?

JAIME: Because it would take too many beers.

She starts to get out of bed.

CRIS: I’m gonna need some refreshments if I’m to endure your ramblings.  Oh.  Oh my gosh, I completely forgot!  I have to go out of town tomorrow.

JAIME: Why didn’t you tell me sooner?

CRIS: It was last minute and I got home really late.  I didn’t think much of it because I go to D.C. all the time, so I plain forgot.  I guess I was a little scared too.

Jaime sits up as well.  She uncovers herself and begins to stand, then stops and faces him.

JAIME: Scared of what?

CRIS : What if something bad happens?  You know, like the 11th, this could be our last night together.

Jaime wraps her up and takes her back down to the bed, looking down on her.

JAIME: Then we better make it a long “good-night.”

He throws the comforter up and over, completely concealing them.  Cris giggles heartily as they wrestle under the covers.
